Frequently Asked Questions

A closer look at Montessori education and life at Navarre Montessori Academy.

About Montessori Education

  • Montessori Education

The Montessori approach was founded in 1907 by Dr. Maria Montessori, the first woman in Italy to become a physician. Through years of observing how children naturally learn, she discovered that they thrive when given the freedom to explore and make choices in a thoughtfully prepared environment. Today, Montessori education inspires schools around the world, nurturing curiosity, independence, and a lifelong love of learning, from infancy through adolescence.

  • Montessori vs Traditional education

Montessori education encourages learning through all five senses, not just through listening or memorizing. Children move, touch, explore, and learn at their own pace while choosing from a wide range of hands-on materials. Multi-age classrooms allow younger children to learn from older peers, and older ones to reinforce their understanding by helping others. This approach cultivates independence, motivation, and joy in learning.

  • Our Focus

Not at all. Montessori education is a whole-child approach that nurtures intellectual, emotional, social, and physical growth. It emphasizes creativity, independence, and respect for oneself, others, and the environment. Children develop concentration, confidence, and empathy as they explore math, language, science, art, and practical life lessons in meaningful, real-world ways.

  • Montessori Schools

Because “Montessori” is not a trademarked term, schools may vary in their authenticity. The best way to ensure that a program truly follows Montessori principles is to ask about its credentials and teacher certifications. Navarre Montessori Academy is proudly a member of the American Montessori Society (AMS) and the International Montessori Council (IMC) and is currently pursuing full IMC accreditation.

  • Montessori children

Yes. Studies show that Montessori graduates tend to be self-motivated, responsible, and creative thinkers. They often demonstrate strong social and problem-solving skills, emotional maturity, and a lasting enthusiasm for learning. These qualities support success in academics and beyond.

  • Montessori and readiness

No. Montessori education focuses on readiness, not speed. While children may progress quickly in certain areas, the goal is not to push them ahead but to meet them where they are developmentally. The true aim is to foster curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.

  • Montessori children

Children from Montessori environments typically adapt well to new settings. They have developed independence, focus, and self-discipline, which help them transition smoothly. Their strong sense of responsibility and enthusiasm for learning often make them natural leaders in any classroom.

  • Montessori discipline

Discipline in Montessori classrooms is rooted in respect and understanding, not rewards or punishments. Teachers approach challenges calmly, connecting with children at eye level to understand their emotions and guide them toward positive choices. This fosters self-regulation, empathy, and independence.

You can read more in our Discipline Policy.

  • Montessori option

We believe Montessori is right for every child but it requires partnership with parents who value independence, patience, and consistency. When home and school work together, children flourish in both confidence and joy.
